Contemporary Festival Rules


1. The festival is open to any student of high school age or younger.
2. Composers who have "come of age" in the 20th Century (born approximately 1880 or after) in accordance with the State Certificate of Merit rule.
3. There are two divisions; Division I, levels III through VI; Division II, levels VII through Advanced.
4. Division I students may combine sets of compositions by different composers.
5. Division II students must have all compositions by the same composer and/or collection.
6. Each total performance shall not exceed six minutes.
7. The entry fee is $35 per student. For ensemble performances, the entry fee is $25.00 per student. (Amended 8/26/24 from original date 12/6/07).
8. Students shall be entered using the current year festival entry form found in the directory.
9. Teachers shall include one check per studio made out to "MTAC", or parents can pay online.
10. The entry deadline will be listed in the calendar and in the newsletter. No late entries will be accepted, and no scheduling changes or requests will be made after the deadline date.
11. Students may not use arrangements or transcriptions.
12. Music must be provided for the judges, with measure numbers written in.  No photo copies are allowed. Paper clips or "Post-its” shall be used to mark the appropriate pages.
13. An award may-be given to a student who plays good, non standard repertoire in any style, recognizing teachers' efforts to present quality new music.
14. The judge's decision is final. Judges will not accept any contact with teachers, students, or audience.
15. Teachers will receive the list of the judges’ choices of winning students, with the form signed by each judge.
